McDonnells to join Obamas for veterans speech Wednesday

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell will join President Obama in an appearance Wednesday at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton.

Obama, along with First Lady Michelle Obama, is expected to announce a plan to put veterans to work as part of a three-day bus tour touting his jobs plan. The joint appearance puts the Democratic president on a stage with the leader of the Republican Governors Association.

“As a veteran, and as the son and father of veterans, (McDonnell) is always interested in new ideas about how to get more of our veterans back to work in this tough economy,” spokesman Tucker Martin said.

The Hampton stop follows an appearance at an Emporia school on Tuesday and precedes a trip to a Richmond-area fire station on Wednesday.

McDonnell previously hoped Obama would take time on his visit to survey earthquake damage in Louisa County in light of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s decision to deny Virginia recovery aid. However, the president turned down the offer.

Virginia First Lady Maureen McDonnell will also be on hand for Wednesday’s event.
