4-year-old in back of car shoots self while mother smokes marijuana

A 4-year-old Louisiana boy sitting with his siblings in the back of a car shot himself in the head and killed himself Saturday with a handgun while his mother and another adult smoked marijuana in the front.

Jarion Walker, the boy, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said.

The incident occurred at about 10:45 p.m. in a suburb outside New Orleans, police said.

Walker was sat in the back seat with his infant siblings when he found the gun, put it to his head, and fired, according to authorities.

“It was a contact wound to the forehead, right above the right eyebrow,” Gerry Cvitanovich, the Jefferson Parish coroner, said.

The boy’s mother and an adult were in the front seat when they heard the gun go off, Lopinto said.

Walker was taken to a local hospital and died of his wounds, according to Lopinto.

No arrests were made, but authorities are conducting a full investigation and will deliver their findings to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office, according to a report.

“I don’t think it was appropriate to make an arrest at this point,” Lopinto said. “They just lost a child, and it certainly wasn’t intentional, by any means.”

The firearm used in the shooting is believed to be the property of the boy’s father, and Walker found it under the seat, police said.

Following the child’s death, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning people to secure their guns and never leave them inside vehicles.

“These types of deaths can certainly be prevented,” Lopinto said.
