The Onion’s ‘college activism’ piece sounds like real life

The Onion — known as the best satire news site — sometimes leaves us wondering if their pieces are real or not. A recent case in point comes from Tuesday’s infographic piece, “Tips For Successful Campus Activism.”

Here are some of the best:

  • Before you start, be completely honest with yourself about whether or not your cause is stupid.
  • Encourage participation. Make sure that everyone who agrees with you has a voice.
  • Getting the president of your university to step down is the only sure way to know if you were successful. Anything less will be a hollow victory.
  • Above all, stay strong and never give up the fight! You don’t want to give “the man” the satisfaction of dismantling your demonstration by putting pressure on you or cordially agreeing to your terms.

Why aren’t these real tips? Sure, some of them are silly, and yet students have actually taken them seriously. It seems that a real aim for student protesters is to make somebody resign and lose their livelihood. But other tips are good, like the very first one. Why do students have to read the Onion to get quite possibly the best advice?

Well, maybe with any hope, one of them won’t know that the Onion isn’t real, and they can actually learn some useful tactics — or to think twice about how messed up their protest tactics actually are.

The Facebook comments for the most part were happy to add tips of their own.

Other amusing comments included how “I’m offensive and I find this article very millennial,” and “I thought the Onion was fratire.”
