A super PAC backing Hillary Clinton returned fire at Donald Trump on Thursday, responding to a video mocking the Democratic candidate for barking in front of an audience at a recent campaign event.
But instead of showing a candidate mimicking a nervous dog, the Republicans’ “perfect answer” to threats facing the U.S. is Trump’s “very good brain.”
The ad, released by Priorities USA, at the start mirrors Trump’s Instagram video. Both videos begin with the same premise, setting the scene with America’s “toughest opponents,” and showing footage of Russian President Vladimir Putin flipping a wrestling opponent and a gun-wielding Islamic State militant.
What follows is a recent phone call interview on MSNBC in which Trump is asked who he consults “consistently” so that he would be ready for his first day in office, if elected president.
“I’m speaking with myself, number one, because I’ve got a very good brain and I’ve said a lot of things,” Trump replies, which prompts a video of Clinton laughing hysterically from what looks to be her testimony at a House select committee on Benghazi hearing in October of 2015.
“We don’t need to be a punchline,” the ad concludes in the same fashion Trump’s original video ends.
“Hey Trump, we fixed your ad for you,” Priorities USA spokesman Justin Barasky teased in an emailed statement to the Washington Post.
The ads are the latest evidence of the two leading candidates’ pivot away from primary season, in which both have substantial leads, as they both look ahead to the general election.
