The NCAA has cleared Maryland 7-foot-1 freshman Alex Len to play this season, but he must sit out 10 games because he violated “amateurism guidelines,” according to the NCAA. Len is able to participate in practice, but will not be eligible for games until after Christmas. The Terps 11th game is scheduled for Dec. 28 against visiting Albany.
“Alex has been working very hard to prepare himself for this opportunity,” Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said in a statement. “We are looking forward to having him on the court and to see how he’ll fit into what we want to do offensively and defensively.”

Len’s debut could closely coincide with the return of sophomore point guard Pe’Shon Howard, who is expected to miss 10-12 weeks with a broken foot. The Terps open ACC play on Jan. 8 at North Carolina State. Until their return, Maryland will have only seven scholarship players.
