Not even Jon Stewart will defend Hillary Clinton after e-mail press conference

Jon Stewart opened Tuesday’s episode of “The Daily Show” by briefly addressing Hillary Clinton’s press conference about the e-mail scandal earlier that day.

While Stewart insisted that he would have “full coverage” Wednesday — perhaps he needs to painstakingly figure out how to defend Clinton — he couldn’t resist poking fun at the former secretary of State for her highly-criticized remarks.

“Just a briefing: It was about the e-mail scandal,” Stewart said of the press conference. “Turns out, it’s all okay. She said she did not use the government e-mail. Rather, she used her personal e-mail because she did not want to have two phones.”

“I mean, that’s a super hassle to have two phones,” the comedian said sarcastically. “Isn’t she surrounded by people who like — doesn’t she have like a sandwich team? She is surrounded by a team of people at all times. She couldn’t be like, ‘Hey man, could you hold this other phone for me’?”

The Hillary joke, albeit fleeting, is a rare departure for the liberal Stewart, who just last week downplayed the controversy surrounding Clinton’s exclusive use of a private e-mail system while at the State Department.

We’ll see how critical he actually is during Wednesday’s episode.
