Disgraced singer and songwriter R. Kelly missed a court appearance in his child pornography case because he had a toe infection.
Kelly’s lawyer, Steve Greenberg, said in Chicago court that his client’s toe was so badly infected that the nail had to be removed, and Kelly was worried that somebody might step on his foot while he was being escorted to and from court.
Kelly, 52, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, has pleaded not guilty to the child pornography charges, and in court Wednesday, Judge Harry Leinenweber said he’d issue rulings later on motions to dismiss some of Kelly’s charges and reconsider bond for him.
In May, Kelly failed to respond to a lawsuit from one of his accusers because, according to his lawyer, he can’t read and was served with the court documents while in jail. Lawyer Steve Greenberg said Kelly is “basically illiterate” and can’t read fan mail.
The once-hailed “King of R&B” was arrested in February of this year on 10 counts of aggravated sexual assault and has since faced additional charges, including creating child pornography. Kelly has maintained a not guilty plea in the charges against him.
