A majority of British adults believe climate change could lead to human extinction, a new poll says.
According to a survey released Wednesday and conducted by ComRes, 54% of British adults believe “climate change threatens our extinction as a species.” In contrast, only 25% of British adults disagreed.
The poll came after environmental group Extinction Rebellion protested for 11 days in London last month, blocking off major roads and disrupting trains, among other things. The group claims to be an “international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience to achieve radical change in order to minimize the risk of human extinction and ecological collapse.”
The poll revealed that 22% of people back the strategies of Extinction Rebellion, while 32% disagreed.
“While most of the public are agreed on the problem and its cause, the poll finds the public less enthusiastic about how Extinction Rebellion is bringing its message to the country,” ComRes Chairman Andrew Hawkins said in a statement.
“Its aims and tactics are far more likely to appeal to people under 35, so it is little surprise that the Group’s warning message of human extinction has less resonance with older age groups.”
The survey was conducted between April 26-28 with a sample size of 2,037 people.
