Tourist cited for entering closed Hawaii park

HONOLULU (AP) — State officials say there will be zero tolerance for entering Sacred Falls State Park on Oahu’s windward side, which has been closed for about 13 years.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources cited an 18-year-old tourist for entering the park last week. She was hiking with two juvenile boys when one of them slipped and fell. The 17-year-old boy needed to be rescued by the Honolulu Fire Department.

The state closed the park to protect the public after a landslide there killed eight people and injured dozens of others in 1999.

Officials will not hesitate to cite those who trespass at the park. There are multiple signs alerting the public the park is closed.

Between May 2011 and May 2012, at least 45 citations were issued.
