When a congressional candidate starts talking about his female opponent as someone who “can’t think for herself, can’t speak for herself, can’t act for herself, can’t vote for herself,” he’d better hope he’s a Democrat — otherwise, it will become a national story someplace other than Fox News. If he were a Republican, his party would probably even disown him under pressure from the media.
In fact, what Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) said at a rally last Wednesday — specifically about “these outside resources coming here picking a candidate, a hand-picked candidate that can’t think for herself” — even bears the whiff of conspiracy theorism.
DEMOCRAT CHALLENGING MAYRA FLORES CLAIMS SHE CAN’T ‘THINK’ OR ‘SPEAK’ FOR HERSELF
Here’s the takeaway, though: Gonzales is supposed to be winning this race without too much difficulty. When he starts sounding like a raving, paranoid, sexist conspiracy theorist — one step away from claiming that elite Jewish bankers installed his opponent — it’s enough to prove that he thinks he’s losing. And he’s probably right.
Rep. Mayra Flores (R-TX) is running for reelection against Gonzales in the most Democratic of the four Texas congressional districts that border Mexico. She is in Congress today because she won a special election this summer, when the seat was rated as 5 points more Democratic than the average congressional seat — that is, D+5 in politics lingo. Now, she is defending a redrawn seat that is supposed to be D+17. Republicans in the state legislature drew the seat this way on purpose, ostensibly so that a Republican can win the neighboring (also heavily Hispanic) 15th District as part of the long-term process of South Texas throwing off one-party Democratic rule.
Gonzalez, who nearly lost the 15th district seat in 2020 and abandoned it to run in the easier race against Flores, is now savaging her gender, her intelligence, and her ability to think independently. After all, she is a woman, right? You get it? She must be dumb.
This is rather ridiculous and sickening to watch, especially from a party that is willing to scream “racism” and “sexism” over almost anything. At least now, when he loses, Gonzalez will really, really deserve to lose.
