CHICAGO (AP) — Officials of the Chicago Teachers Union remain mum on the details of the illness that has hospitalized the union’s president and potential challenger to Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
The only thing CTU spokeswoman Stephanie Gadlin would say Tuesday about Karen Lewis’ health is that “she’s not well, but is being evaluated and is getting medical care.
Lewis was admitted to an undisclosed hospital after experiencing discomfort Sunday. Lewis recently underwent surgery designed to reduce her absorption of calories.
Lewis, who tangled with Emanuel during a 2012 teacher strike, is circulating petitions and raising money for a possible challenge of the mayor next year. Lewis hasn’t yet said if she’ll run.
Emanuel and Alderman Bob Fioretti, who has declared his mayoral candidacy, have both issued statements wishing Lewis a speedy recovery.
