On a 14 -to-12 party line vote Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee killed a resolution introduced by Rep. Frank Wolf, R-VA, that would have required the Justice Department to release specific information on the 230 prisoners still held at Guantanamo Bay prior to their release or transfer. The Obama administration expects to finish reviewing the cases during the next two months.
Wolf, who is adamantly opposed to bringing Gitmo detainees to Virginia, has been trying since March to obtain such information without success, leading the normally soft-spoken congressman to accuse Attorney General Eric Holder of politicizing the Justice Department.
In a blistering July 10 letter to Holder, Wolf said: “Your response is an insult to the American people who have legitimate questions about your intentions with regards to the transfer, trial, and/or release of Guantanamo detainees into the United States.”
So, too, the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee, who apparently think the public has no right to know the background of Gitmo detainees who might soon be released into their communities.
