Former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney said Friday he is considering backing Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, specifically because he likes his running mate, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld.
Weld governed the Bay State as a Republican in the mid-1990s and helped raise support for Romney. The 2012 GOP nominee said if Weld were leading the ticket and Johnson were vice president, he would jump on board.
“If Bill Weld were at the top of the ticket, it would be very easy for me to vote for Bill Weld for president,” Romney said during a pre-taped interview that aired Friday night on CNN. “So I’ll get to know Gary Johnson better and see if he’s someone who I could end up voting for. That’s something which I’ll evaluate over the coming weeks and months.”
But Romney does not agree with Johnson on marijuana legalization, which Johnson supports.
“Marijuana makes people stupid,” Romney said.
The establishment GOP politician is currently in the Utah mountains, where he is hosting his annual ideas conference and evaluating how to respond to Trump. This year, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse and former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta are among those attending the retreat.
