GOODIN APPEAL
JACKSON — Death row inmate Howard Dean Goodin is back before the Mississippi Supreme Court for a second round of arguments that he is mentally disabled and shouldn’t be executed. The Supreme Court will hear arguments Tuesday in Jackson. Goodin is appealing an adverse 2010 ruling from Newton County Circuit Judge Marcus Gordon, who found Goodin mentally competent and denied Goodin’s motion for a new trial. The Supreme Court granted Goodin a hearing in 2009 on claims of mental disability and ineffective work by lawyer who represented Goodin at the time. Those post-conviction claims were initially dismissed by Gordon in 2007. In such claims, an inmate argues he has found new evidence — or a possible constitutional issue — that could persuade a court to order a new trial. Goodin was convicted of capital murder in 1999. UNDER THE CAPITOL DOME-ANALYSIS
JACKSON, Miss. — In some scenarios, far-fetched though they might’ve been, Haley Barbour would’ve been traveling the United States these days as the Republican nominee for president. Instead, he’s now on the sidelines what he does best — dispensing political advice for the Republican Party. Since finishing his second term as Mississippi governor in January, Barbour has been in demand as a Sunday morning talk show pundit, and for the past few weeks, he has been releasing video snippets called “Coffee With Haley.” In the two- and three-minute clips, Barbour has given his opinions on everything from the new federal health care law to U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri, who angered people by saying women could avoid getting pregnant in cases of “legitimate” rape. AP News Analysis. By Emily Wagster Pettus.
