Lawmakers react to ‘senseless’ Las Vegas tragedy

Members of Congress woke up Monday to news of the worst mass shooting incident in U.S. history, and offered prayers for the victims.

“Horrified and heartbroken by the awful tragedy in #LasVegas last night,” said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. “Praying for those lost, wounded & waiting for news from loved ones.”

“Such a senseless tragedy in Las Vegas,” House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said. “This horrific act has our nation praying for the victims and their families. May God bless us all.”

“Our nation woke up this morning to tragedy on an unimaginable scale,” McCarthy added in a separate statement. “These are times when we turn to God trying to understand how such inhuman acts can happen. Our nation prays for those who died and for those still fighting to live.”

Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., said he has talked to the White House and Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval about the shooting, which he called a “senseless massacre.”

“I want to thank our first responders for their swift actions and efforts that without a doubt saved numerous lives,” Heller said. “I’ve been in contact with the White House and Governor Sandoval, and I will continue to monitor the situation as this horrific event unfolds. Lynne and I are praying for all of the victims and their families who are experiencing immense pain and grave, shocking loss that cannot be measured.”

Both Heller and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, R-Nev., praised police and other emergency workers who rushed to the scene.

“I am working with the City of Las Vegas and Clark County to ensure that local officials have the resources they need to support our community and investigate these tragic events,” Cortez Masto said in a statement Monday.

Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., who represents Las Vegas, said her office and staff is available to help.

“My heart aches for the victims, their loved ones, and our community,” she said. “We are a resilient and benevolent town that will not be intimidated by acts of violence.”

“Sickened and heartbroken,” said Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas. “My prayers are with the wounded & families of those killed.”

“My thoughts are in Las Vegas with the dozens of victims of this horrific gun attack,” said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. “What a nightmare.”

Stephen Paddock is the suspected shooter who rained down hundreds of rounds on people at a country music festival Sunday night. Police stormed his room at the Mandalay Bay hotel and killed up, but not before Paddock was able to kill more than 50 people and wound more than 200 others.

Police found his room stocked with weapons.

There were no other suspects, but police were looking to interview a woman he lived with, Marilou Danley.
