Ferguson names Miami major as new police chief

The Ferguson Police Department has selected a police major from Miami who was in charge of the public information office there to lead the Missouri city’s cops, according to city officials.

Major Delrish L. Moss, 51, beat out five other candidates who interviewed for the position. City manager De’Carlon Seewood said Moss “exemplifies the type of experience in law enforcement that we believe will enhance the many new programs within the Ferguson Police Department.”

Moss will replace the city’s former police chief Thomas Jackson, who resigned last year following the Justice Department’s report that police officers had regularly violated the rights of black residents.

“We understand the past 18 months have not been easy for everyone, but the city is now moving forward and we are excited to have Major Moss lead our police department,” Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III said in a statement.

Moss is a 32-year veteran of the Miami police department who worked most recently in the organization’s public information office.

He will lead the department’s 72 employees and 54 commissioned officers, according to the city’s website.
