A massive internet outage left a handful of news outlets’ and other popular websites unavailable Tuesday morning.
The outage at the cloud service company Fastly led to websites including the New York Times, CNN, Twitch, Reddit, and the Guardian, among many others, going offline. Other sites that went down included Britain’s gov.uk site, Amazon, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Hulu, Spotify, Etsy, and PayPal, per USA Today.
“This was a technical issue triggered by a Fastly service configuration and is not related to a cyberattack,” a spokesperson for Fastly told the Washington Examiner.

Early on Tuesday, Fastly acknowledged there was a problem and said they were “continuing to investigate the issue,” according to the Associated Press. As of around 7:15 a.m. ET, the issue appeared to have been fixed.
“The issue has been identified and a fix has been applied. Customers may experience increased origin load as global services return,” Fastly said in an update on their website.
“We identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions across our POPs globally and have disabled that configuration,” the company added in a social media post. “Our global network is coming back online.”
Down Detector, a website that offers status information regarding various electronic outages, said that “reports indicate there may be a widespread outage at Fastly.”
