And it could happen.

This possibility, of course, isn’t because Ocasio-Cortez has the best ideas or brains for the country. Not even close. It’s because there are enough younger voters who believe the system is failing them and the country is broken. Blow the whole thing up, they say. And they have zero concern about the consequences.

What are those consequences? Here’s what Democratic Socialists of America intend to do if given power: 

• Abolish the Senate
• Abolish the presidency 
• Abolish the Electoral College 
• Abolish the Supreme Court in its current form and expand it to the point that it looks like the New York Yankees roster
• Add the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico as states, thereby effectively giving the Democrats four more Senate seats and permanent power in the upper chamber
• Abolish prisons
• Abolish ICE
• Defund the police
• Seize major private corporations and have the government run them instead
• Implement a 32-hour workweek
• Cancel all student debt
• Implement nationwide rent control
• Provide free education from pre-K through college
• Allow anyone in the country illegally to vote
• Grant all illegal immigrants permanent citizenship status

It’s amusing on some level and disturbing on another that establishment Democrats all got the memo to talk about how the socialist, arguably communist, takeover of the party is all part of a “big tent.”

As Bill Maher recently remarked, you know who else houses big tents? Clowns.

Take DSA co-Chairwoman Megan Romer as an example. She sat down for what was supposed to be a comfy interview with David Remnick of the New Yorker. But when Remnick actually did Journalism 101 and asked for specifics around Romer’s declaration around “taxing the hell out of millionaires,” she exposed herself as a clueless clown with no grasp of what it would look like to taxpayers.

“I think most billionaires got their wealth because they exploited the working class in some very significant way, usually,” Romer told Remnick. “Are we exploiting people is the bigger question, as opposed to some sort of arbitrary red line of, ‘You can have this much money or not have that much money’? But we do believe in taxing the hell out of millionaires, yeah, absolutely.”

Remnick rightly followed up by asking Romer to clarify what kind of number she was talking about from a taxation perspective. And here was her response.

“Yeah, you know, again, I don’t have, like, a solid number,” Romer replied.

“But shouldn’t you? If you’re the co-chair of the DSA, shouldn’t you be more specific than ‘taxing the hell’ out of something?” he retorted.

“Yeah, we need to look at what we need to pay for in the interim, what sort of tax base we need for that to happen, and build from there,” Romer said.

Another problem for the Democratic Party is that establishment officials are welcoming these clowns into that big tent. Guess what happens next: The clowns will destroy the tent and take down every establishment Democrat with them. The “E” word is a dirty one in politics today, as in “establishment.” Democrats are realizing that through the primary process, they’re going to become another “E” word: extinct.

The Democratic National Committee is already essentially extinct, at least financially. According to the Federal Election Committee, the committee carries an $18.5 million debt. Its cash on hand is just $16.5 million. In contrast, the RNC has $128.5 million in cash on hand with zero debt. DNC Chairman Ken Martin, a protege of Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), is barely holding on to a job that no sane member of the party wishes to inherit.

Meanwhile, the DSA has $5.2 million on hand with zero debt.

Add it all up, and it’s hard to imagine an establishment Democrat emerging from the pack in 2028 as the party nominee. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) was once seen as the favorite to represent the party, but in the end, will the DSA allow for an inauthentic establishment white guy with a horrific record as governor to represent them? Will the DSA back another patently inauthentic candidate in former Vice President Kamala Harris? How about former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg? Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL)? Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA)? Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ)?

Please.

As it stands now, Ocasio-Cortez is the best candidate in this current environment to win the hearts and minds of the DSA. And she’s already moderating her radical positions.

In her friendly conversation with ABC’s Jonathan Karl on Sunday, she was asked about Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong’s past comments on defunding the police and abolishing prisons.

“I have a local city councilman that has this saying, ‘Woke 1 was crazy,'” Ocasio-Cortez told Karl, who predictably laughed along. “And I think that what’s important is that we have to assess what a candidate is saying now.”

Well, if “Woke 1” was crazy, that makes Ocasio-Cortez herself crazy.

Here is how Ocasio-Cortez responded to a question about defunding the police in June 2020: “When a teenager or preteen does something harmful in a suburb, white communities bend over backwards to find alternatives to incarceration for their loved ones to ‘protect their future,’ like community service or rehab or restorative measures. Why don’t we treat black and brown people the same way? Why doesn’t the criminal system care about black teens’ futures the way they care for white teens’ futures?”

That sounds very Woke 1, doesn’t it? But Ocasio-Cortez may be running to replace Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) or may have her eyes on the presidency. So we’re just supposed to pretend she never said what she said just a few short years ago. And for his part, Karl didn’t bother to challenge her on any of this.

So will Ocasio-Cortez run for president? The bet here is that she would have an excellent chance to be the nominee if the DSA continues to engulf the party. But does she have the temperament? Can she work with centrists in her own party, let alone Republicans, on a hopelessly split Capitol Hill? Because we all saw what happened in Munich earlier this year when she was asked what her response would be as president if China invaded Taiwan, and it wasn’t pretty.

“Um, you know, I think that this is such a, you know, I think that this is, this is of course a very long-standing policy of the United States,” she mumbled over an awkward 20 seconds when struggling to offer a coherent response. After some rare mockery, even from legacy media, she ran to the New York Times to defend herself.

If this is how she handled her disastrous performance in Munich, how would she hold up during a two-year campaign for president? What would a debate against Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio look like?

In her seven years as a lawmaker, Ocasio-Cortez, especially for someone who is arguably the most recognizable in Congress, has not accomplished anything of substance. A nonpartisan study by the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University ranked her 230th out of 240 members of Congress in terms of effectiveness. And among the 19 Democratic congressional members in New York State, Ocasio-Cortez ranked last in effectiveness, according to the same study.

IF ‘WOLE 1’ WAS ‘CRAZY,’ WHAT DOES AOC CALL THE DSA?

All sizzle, no steak. All foam, no beer.

President Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? It’s a dream for the DSA and many in legacy media. Once in a blue moon, dreams can come true. That won’t be the case here.
