It is farcical to suggest, as the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders organization does, that the United States has the least press freedom of any G7 nation.
This matters because the organization’s annual “World Press Freedom Index” is making waves for its assertion that the U.S. is sorely lacking in media freedom. Semafor noted last week that the index now puts the U.S. below the other G7 nations of Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Italy, and Japan. As I noted on X, this is a wholly unserious assertion. The World Press Freedom Index has three immediate problems.
