Maryland governor forms redistricting commission on Election Day
From David Zimmermann
Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) took the opportunity on Election Day to announce the formation of a new redistricting advisory commission that’s responsible for recommending congressional districts in Maryland.
The commission will be led by Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), whom Moore appointed alongside two other members. The commission will have five members in total and begin its work this month.
“We will explore every avenue possible to make sure Maryland has fair and representative maps,” Moore said in a statement. “This commission will ensure the people are heard.”
Moore previously expressed interest in leading Maryland’s redistricting battle against Trump and the Republican Party’s efforts to gain more House seats by the 2026 midterm elections.
Maryland joins Virginia in becoming the latest state to consider mid-decade redistricting in favor of Democrats. Moore’s announcement comes one week after the Maryland Senate struck down Democrats’ redistricting agenda in the state.
