Silwa puts the red beret back on for Election Day
From Molly Parks
Sliwa is donning his signature red beret for Election Day, returning to his roots as New York voters cast their ballots to name the city’s next mayor.
The Republican candidate sported the headwear as he spoke to poll workers at Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx, according to the New York Times. Sliwa has ditched the hat in recent appearances in an attempt to show his serious commitment to his run for office.
Sliwa has worn the red beret since the 1970s as a symbol of his crime prevention group, the Guardian Angels. He has taken some heat for wearing the beret during the campaign — most recently from President Donald Trump, who made an eleventh-hour endorsement for Cuomo on Monday evening.
“We must also remember this — A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
