More evidence that the federal tightening of the purse strings equals layoffs for contractors in the region.
Lockheed Martin Corp., one of the region’s largest employers, sent notice last month to the state of Maryland that it plans to lay off up to 95 employees by mid-August.
Although the company classified the layoff as a plant closure, the squeeze is coming because a government contract is expiring in September, according to the Baltimore Sun.
The facility on Ora Glen Drive will not be shut down, The Sun said, and the company is working to find replacement jobs for some of those laid off.
