John McCain sends subtle message on torture on anniversary of being released from POW camp

Sen. John McCain sent a veiled message on torture Wednesday to mark the anniversary of being released by Vietnam as a prisoner of war.

McCain tweeted a gif of himself on the day he was released by his Vietnamese captors, with the caption, “45 years ago today.”

The gif shows McCain having difficulty walking as he exits a bus in Hanoi, Vietnam, on March 14, 1973.

McCain spoke out against President Trump’s nominee to be CIA director, Gina Haspel, on Tuesday, for her position on torture.

Haspel has faced criticism for her involvement in waterboarding and other interrogation methods at a covert CIA prison in Thailand in 2002.

“The torture of detainees in U.S. custody during the last decade was one of the darkest chapters in American history,” McCain said in a statement Tuesday. “Ms. Haspel needs to explain the nature and extent of her involvement in the CIA’s interrogation program during the confirmation process.”
