Sergey Lavrov: Trump meeting didn’t cover ‘absurd’ claims of Russian election meddling

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that he did not discuss the U.S. investigation into Russia’s alleged interference into the U.S. election in his Wednesday meeting with President Trump.

“We discussed specific issues and we didn’t even raise those absurd issues,” Lavrov told reporters through an interpreter after his meeting with Trump.

When asked if Trump gave him any assurances that he believed the theory of Russia’s interference is a hoax, Lavrov said no assurances were needed.

Lavrov said Trump has repeatedly dismissed the “accusations and allegations” about Russia’s alleged “meddling into your domestic affairs.”

“That is why there is no need for him to tell us anything or to give us assurance behind closed doors,” he said.

Lavrov further dismissed the allegations, most of which come from Democrats, by calling it “fake information,” and said the theory “illogically” holds that Russia is in full control of U.S. domestic politics. He said it must be “humiliating” for Americans to hear this news.

“How can it be possible for such a great power and great country?” he said of the United States. “I believe that politicians are damaging the political system of the U.S., trying to pretend that someone is controlling America from the outside.”

The White House released a readout of the meeting that said the two talked about cooperation in the areas of Syria, Ukraine and the Middle East, and the need to “build a better relationship between the United States and Russia.”
