At least 28 corrections officers got paid for staying at home

While the District of Columbia jail system shelled out $9.3 million in overtime to make up for staffing shortages, at least 28 corrections officers were being paid to stay home while they waited on the jail’s personnel disciplinary system.

The jail system paid these employees about $1 million in administrative leave pay, even though judges have ordered corrections officials to reinstate more than a third of the dismissed guards. Instead, jail management has shuffled the employees through its own internal hearings, a process union officials say is used to intimidate and fire employees despite the outside rulings.
