Paul Ryan: House leadership is saving a seat for Steve Scalise

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Wednesday that members of the House leadership meeting keep an empty seat for Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., until he recovers.

“This is where he normally sits,” Ryan told Brian Kilmeade of “Fox & Friends” as he patted the empty seat next to him. “We’re keeping his seat right here vacant until he returns. Most of us have gone to see him or we’ve spoken with him and he’s making a very good recovery. So, our prayers are being answered.”

Kilmeade also spoke with other members attending the House leadership meeting, such as House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

“I’ve known Steve 10 years before he ever got here,” said McCarthy. “This is one of the strongest men you’ll ever meet. I know it’s a very difficult obstacle, but I was just with him on Friday. Even the doctors will tell you how strong he’s been through all of this.”

Scalise was injured during a shooting at the Republican practice for the congressional baseball game on June 14. One of five injured, Scalise was wounded in the hip and was moved out of the intensive care unit and listed in fair condition last week.
