Derek Jeter voted into Baseball Hall of Fame

World Series champion Derek Jeter has been elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Jeter, 45, spent his entire career playing for the New York Yankees. Beginning in 1995 at the age of 21, Jeter is a 14-time All-Star and a five-time Gold Glove Award winner. He was a shortstop and logged five World Series championships before his retirement in 2014.

The selection of Jeter was nearly unanimous, with only one of the 397 voters on Tuesday declining to support his inclusion into the Hall of Fame. The Yankees retired his No. 2 jersey in 2017.

Jeter’s former teammate Mariano Rivera said that Jeter “had such a deep desire to win, and that singular commitment to his team is what made him so special.”

“Derek prided himself on being a consistent presence,” Rivera said. “No moment was too big. He was fearless, and he was the type of leader we knew we could count on year after year.”

Also voted into the Hall of Fame was 53-year-old Larry Walker, who played for the Montreal Expos, Colorado Rockies, and St. Louis Cardinals. During a career that spanned from 1989 to 2005, Walker won the National League MVP award, was a five-time All-Star, was and seven-time Golden Glove Award winner.
