Sen. Patrick Leahy hospitalized after feeling unwell

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) was taken to the hospital to be cared for overnight after he reported not feeling well, according to his office.

Though residing in Virginia, Leahy, 82, was taken to a hospital in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. In a statement, Leahy’s office said the move was a precaution.

“Late today (Thursday) Senator Leahy was not feeling well and was taken to a Washington area hospital for tests, as a precaution. He had been at their residence in McLean, Virginia, at the time. At the recommendation of his doctors, he is expected to remain overnight for observation. As is our practice, we will offer updates as warranted,” the statement read.


The most senior member of the Senate suffered a fall last June, for which he underwent surgery and started recovery. He was seen walking around the halls of the Senate as recently as September, according to Politico. It was not made known whether his current health issues are related to the injury.

Leahy announced in November 2021 that he would not seek reelection this year and would retire from the Senate position he has held since 1974.

“Marcelle and I have reached the conclusion it is time to put down the gavel,” Leahy said at the time. “It is time to pass the torch to the next Vermonter who will carry on this work for a great state. It’s time to come home.”
