Audit rips county on fire overtime pay

Overtime payouts accounted for at least half the salaries of 87Montgomery County Fire & Rescue workers last year, according to a new inspector general report documenting a host of sloppy management practices in tracking overtime.

In two extreme cases, an officer earned upward of $90,000 -— or more than 100 percent of his base pay — in overtime dollars, while one employee frequently worked 48 consecutive hours of overtime in addition to regular hours and non-consecutive overtime, both of which far exceed allowable amounts set by the fire department.
