BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Board of Estimates has approved an increase of 9 percent for water and sewer rates for Baltimore City customers.

Wednesday’s action will raise the annual water and sewer bill for a family of four by about $97.

Officials say the rate increases were needed to meet unfunded state and federal mandates and rehabilitation of aging infrastructure.

The rate hike takes effect Thursday.
