Caitlyn Jenner: Trump’s presidency has been ‘extraordinarily disappointing’

Transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner has been let down by President Trump.

Jenner voted for Trump in the 2016 presidential election, was hopeful about his presidency after he portrayed himself as a “real friend” of the gay community. But the former Olympic decathlete, who publicly identifies as a Republican, is now disappointed by the Trump administration’s rollback of protections for transgender students in schools, and his efforts to restore the ban against transgender people serving in the military.

Jenner’s message to Trump, Variety reports, is to “get over it!…I honestly don’t know what happened when he got in there. It was extraordinarily disappointing.”

When Trump withdrew federal guidelines allowing transgender students to use the bathrooms that match the gender they identify with, Jenner invited the president over Twitter to talk on the phone. Trump ignored the invitation, Jenner told Variety.

“He’s not been doing a very good job, but it’s not over yet,” said Jenner, who has been traveling to Washington every few weeks to privately meet with members of Trump’s White House and lawmakers to advocate for transgender rights. “I met with Paul Ryan. I’ve met with just about everybody. Publicly, they aren’t supportive of transgender rights.…I’ve never had anybody not be nice to my face.”

“Today, I’m very politically involved,” Jenner added. “Nobody really knows it. I do it very quietly because I have been so criticized by the liberal side of the media. I can get more things done if I don’t stick my nose into everything publicly.”
