PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) — Petersburg police say a human skull found in the Appomattox River could predate the Civil War.
Police tell media outlets that a couple walking their dog found the skull Sunday morning in the mud along River Street when the river was at low tide.
Deputy police chief Maj. William Rhode says the skull appeared to be old. Police don’t know how long it had been at the site.
The skull was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Richmond.
