Crews worked Sunday to restore lost power during the severe thunderstorm that whipped across the D.C. region the previous afternoon.
As of around noon Dominion Virginia Power still had more than 5,800 customers without power in Northern Virginia while Pepco reported about 3,000 customers were awaiting electricity. By early Sunday evening that had been reduced to 2,200 and 900 customers, respectively.
Storms with winds as high as 70 mph swept the Washington region Saturday, knocking out power to some 200,000 homes from Northern Virginia to Baltimore.
The sudden storms caught some off guard.
Twelve people at the Prince George’s County Fair were trampled as fairgoers made their way to the crowded exits of the Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro. Four were taken to the hospital.
At the Rosslyn Jazz Festival, concertgoers scrambled when strong winds caused part of the stage to collapse, toppling speakers and injuring one worker.
