WASHINGTON (AP) — A Washington area nonprofit is offering free rides home for area residents who drink on the Fourth of July, ensuring they get home safely and don’t attempt to drive.
Last July 4 the nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program provided more than 100 free rides under its SoberRide program. On average, more than 250 riders have used the service each July 4 for the last eight years.
Residents who call between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 4 a.m. Thursday can get a free taxi ride up to $30. Residents who need a taxi can call 1-800-200-TAXI to request a ride.
The free rides are also offered on other holidays including on Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day and the two to three weeks before and including New Year’s Eve.
