President Joe Biden, in his more casual moments, often sports a blue baseball cap with a winged logo on the front.
Biden has worn the hat, along with a suit and a polo shirt and shorts, to a variety of events dating back to before he became president. So, what is it?

The hat and its red wing logo support the Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children, named for Biden’s late son and working “in school to teach children skills, and to give them tools and procedures that result in the confidence to report, and stop, bullying,” according to its website.
The foundation is named in honor of the president’s oldest son, Beau, who died in 2015 at the age of 46 due to brain cancer. It was launched less than a month after his death. The name of the organization is written in white letters on the left side of Biden’s cap but not the front, sometimes leading to confusion among people who don’t know about the charity.
The Beau Biden Foundation took in $3.9 million in 2020 but drew some controversy for how it chose to use that money, spending only $544,961 of the haul on protecting children from abuse, according to the New York Post. Biden’s other son, the troubled Hunter Biden, sat on the foundation’s board in 2020 but has since left.

The president can often be seen wearing the hat at outdoor events. He was seen sporting it while riding his bike during a vacation on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, while speaking to reporters on the White House South Lawn, and during the Congressional Picnic in July.

Like most anything a president does, wearing the hat has come with some degree of blowback, in this case from those who say the commander in chief’s head should not be used for advertising space. Others defend the hat as a symbol that solicits money for a good cause.
