Hispanic unemployment hits new record low in June

Unemployment for Hispanic workers hit a new record low in June, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

The unemployment rate for Hispanic or Latino workers fell to 4.6 percent in the month, lower than the previous record of 4.8 percent that was set in October 2006 and which has been hit several times in recent months.

Labor force participation, too, rose by 164,000.

Unemployment for minorities has fallen as the jobs recovery has extended into a ninth year. Black unemployment has also touched record lows in recent months.

President Trump has frequently touted the low jobless rates for minorities, including as recently as last week in marking the half-year mark of the tax cut bill he signed.

Yet although minority unemployment has hit new lows during Trump’s tenure, the recovery also predates his presidency. It’s been falling fairly steadily since 2011.
