Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill Monday codifying the right to terminate a pregnancy without governmental restrictions into law.
The new law states that “every pregnant individual has a fundamental right to continue the pregnancy and give birth or to have an abortion.”
The legislation further asserts that “a fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus does not have independent or derivative rights under the laws of the state,” stripping any rights from an unborn baby.

“The serious decision to start or end a pregnancy with medical assistance will remain between a person, their doctor, and their faith,” Polis said in a signing statement.
The governor’s office did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
Colorado is one of several blue states to move in recent years to enact laws protecting abortion rights in anticipation of a Supreme Court ruling limiting or reversing the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
Many red states, in contrast, have passed laws regulating abortion. Last week, for example, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed a bill barring abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

“We also affirmed Arizona’s commitment to protecting the lives of preborn children with the signing of S.B. 1164. The bill prohibits a physician from performing an abortion past 15 weeks gestation, except in a medical emergency,” Ducey said in a tweet.
