Navy identifies sailor killed in Syria

The Navy has identified the service member killed in Syria on Thursday, the first U.S. military casualty in that country since the fight against the Islamic State began.

Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Cooper Dayton, 42, was killed by an improvised explosive device in northern Syria, according to his command. He was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Two based in Virginia Beach, Va.

“We offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Dayton, who made the ultimate sacrifice on a day we set aside time to give thanks for our freedom and to recognize the men and women who defend that right,” said Rear Adm. Brian Brakke, commander, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement he was “deeply saddened” at the loss. “It is a painful reminder of the dangers our men and women in uniform face around the world to keep us safe. Please keep this service member’s family, friends and teammates in your thoughts and prayers, and this Thanksgiving I hope you will join me in expressing thanks to all of our dedicated troops who selflessly protect us everyday,” he said.

EOD technicans specialize in neutralizing and disposing of explosives.

The Navy said Dayton joined the Navy in 1993 and received 19 awards, including the Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, seven Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and the Combat Action Ribbon.
