A 4-year-old boy was killed and his pregnant mother was injured during a shooting just days before Christmas.

The child, identified as Tory’on Dukes, was fatally shot around 1 a.m. Monday morning in Gary, Indiana. Tory’on’s 27-year-old mother, who is three months pregnant, was taken to the hospital after a bullet grazed her face.

No motive has been established as to why someone shot into the second-floor bedroom of their apartment complex, and no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting.

“Here we got somebody outside shooting into this housing development. What are we, 10 days before Christmas?” Gary police Cmdr. Jack Hamady told reporters after the incident.

Both Tory’on and his mother were asleep in her bed when the shooting occurred. Three other children and an adult male were also in the residence when the bullets flew in from the rear portion of their home. They were not injured by the gunfire.

Tory’on’s grandmother said that the boy’s father was recently killed in another shooting in nearby Chicago.
