Man struck by lightning in Maryland

Fire officials say a 29-year-old man was struck by lightening in a Maryland park.

The man was found unconscious on a fishing pier at Fort Smallwood Park in Pasadena during a Sunday evening storm, said Michael Cox, a division chief with the Anne Arundel County fire department.

Witnesses told rescue crews they saw the collapsed man on the pier after a clap of thunder at about 5:30 p.m.

Cox said the man had no pulse when rescue crews arrived and park rangers were performing CPR on him. Paramedics restored a pulse as he was being transported by ambulance to a Baltimore hospital.

Cox said Monday afternoon that he didn’t know the man’s condition, but that he was alive.

Authorities say people should take cover during storms to avoid being hit by lightning. People should go to a building or car, not a tent or outdoor facility like a picnic pavillion, Cox said.

“If people are outside, they are not protected,” he said.
