Bulova: ‘Fairfax County does not want to be Arizona’

Sharon Bulova, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is out of the country, but she responded via e-mail when asked about the proposal by Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart to introduce an Arizona-like immigration law to Virginia.

She noted that the proposal asks for things Fairfax already has the authority to do (and is doing), such as turning convicted criminals who are in this country illegally over to immigration for deportation and cracking down on human trafficking.

“I doubt seriously we need more laws to address these things,” she wrote. “We cooperate with immigration officials when asked and when needed.

“But we should not be expected to do a job the Feds are supposed to be doing, especially at the expense of our traditional local government responsibilities — traffic safety, enforcing and investigating crime,” she continued.

“Fairfax County does not want to be Arizona. We are a very diverse community — something we consider an asset.

Some of the provisions in Chairman Stewart’s Rule of Law are cruel, probably unconstitutional and would create a poisonous climate for our community.”
