Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is now a co-sponsor of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ bill to extend Medicare to everyone in the United States.
“I believe it’s time to take a step back and ask: what is the best way to deliver high quality, low cost health care to all Americans?” the influential liberal senator said in a statement Thursday. “Everything should be on the table, and that’s why I’m co-sponsoring Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All bill that will be introduced later this month.”
The bill from Sanders, I-Vt., which he has introduced in prior Congresses to little fanfare, is getting a lot of support among Democrats. More mainstream Democrats have shown a greater willingness to embrace single payer this year.
The bill is unlikely to go anywhere in the GOP-controlled Congress this session. However, Democrats can point to it as a policy goal in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections.
