Republican Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has vetoed a proposed expansion of Medicaid, just days after the state legislature passed a bill to expand it.
Brownback’s Thursday veto comes as several states, including Georgia and Virginia, are signaling an openness to expanding Medicaid after an Obamacare repeal bill was pulled by House GOP leadership last Friday.
Brownback said in a statement that he was vetoing the bill, which was passed without a veto-proof majority, because it “fails to serve the truly vulnerable before the able-bodied, lacks work requirements to help able-bodied Kansans escape poverty, and burdens the state budget with unrestrainable entitlement cuts.”
Brownback also pointed out that the legislation “funnels more tax dollars to Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry.”
