Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz believes front-running presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will be able to unite progressives if she is the nominee, despite being viewed negatively by a record-high number of Americans.
Schultz was quick to cite polls of high voter enthusiasm and energy among Democrats when questioned by Fox News host Megyn Kelly about Clinton’s ability to scoop up Bernie Sanders’ supporters.
“Really you can point to the evidence we have in New York last night. In exit polls, seven in 10 New Yorkers were energized about Democrats, less than 40 percent of Republicans were,” Schultz said.
The Florida congresswoman pointed at the 2008 primary race between Clinton and then-Sen. Barack Obama, calling it “much more divisive than this one has been.”
Nevertheless, Schultz said she has continued to caution Sanders and Clinton from using divisive methods to win the nomination, so that the party will be able to come back together behind the eventual pick.
