One person is dead and two others face life-threatening injuries after a tour bus broke through a guardrail on an Interstate 270 sky ramp and overturned late Wednesday during afternoon rush hour in Bethesda.
The bus tumbled 45 feet before coming to rest upright next to a northbound lane of the I-270 spur near Democracy Boulevard, causing major traffic delays, according to Montgomery County Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham.
Montgomery fire officials said the bus was carrying at least 15 people, and emergency workers had to pull four people from the wreckage. Twelve people were taken to area hospitals, and children were among those treated at the scene, according to Graham.
Police officials said two other vehicles were involved in the accident, but said it was not clear whether they had collided with the bus. – Markham Heid
