Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley praised Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions as a man of honor and integrity at Tuesday’s attorney general confirmation hearings.
Grassley said Sessions would provide “independent leadership of the highest integrity” leading the Justice Department because of his appreciation for the separation of powers.
“Sen. Sessions knows and respects the importance of an independent attorney general at the department’s helm,” Grassley said at Tuesday’s hearing. “Sen. Sessions’ two decades of service beside me testify without question to this: he is a man of honor and integrity, dedicated to the faithful and fair enforcement of the law, who knows well and deeply respects the Department of Justice and its role.”
Grassley’s focus on Sessions’ character comes as Republicans are preparing for Democrats to lodge attacks against Sessions as racially insensitive. Before the hearings began on Tuesday, protesters in the hearing room wearing Ku Klux Klan garb began shouting and were escorted off the premises.
