Man pulls gun after Popeyes runs out of chicken sandwiches

Tensions escalated quickly and led to a gun being pulled at a Popeyes in Texas after a group of people were told the store was out of chicken sandwiches.

Houston police were dispatched to the scene of a restaurant after employees said that a group of three men, two women, and a baby were informed at the drive-thru that the store was out of chicken sandwiches, prompting the mob, sans baby, to try and get inside the chicken shack, according to ABC 13.

Employees said that one man was brandishing a gun during the edgy standoff. Those in the store managed to lock the mob of angry customers out while waiting for police to come, although the squad left before law enforcement arrived.

“It was more of an aggravated assault because he was displaying a weapon and threatened employees,” said Houston Police Lt. Larry Crowson.

Police are searching for the man who had the gun, who is described as having small dreadlocks and a tattooed face.

The newly released chicken sandwiches have become a hit sensation. They were released at select Popeyes locations on Aug. 12 and exploded in popularity after tweets exchanged between Popeyes and Chick-fil-A went viral on Aug. 19, sending scores of customers on pilgrimages to stores in search of the meal nationwide.

Because of the popularity, the store has periodically run out of sandwiches at many of its locations across the country. One Tennessee man became so enraged by the dearth of chicken that he filed a $5,000 lawsuit against the chain alleging they practiced false advertising and deceptive business practices.

The man said that in his quest for a sandwich he was hustled out of $25 by an unknown man on Craigslist, suffered damage to his rims and tires driving from store to store, and was humiliated by friends who laughed at him.
