A social media influencer who advocated for former President Donald Trump is walking away from Jan. 6 charges with home detention and probation sentences.
Brandon Straka, 45, was sentenced on Monday to three years of probation and three months of home detention for his participation in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Judge Dabney L. Friedrich, who also imposed a $5,000 fine, said Straka’s actions on Jan. 6 served to undermine democracy and the rule of law, according to the Huffington Post.
Friedrich claimed in Monday’s sentencing that Straka not only participated in the Jan. 6 riot but also “celebrated” it. In Straka’s statement of offense, he admitted he “observed others yelling to take a U.S. Capitol Police Officer’s shield” and joined in on the chants, telling Friedrich he was “deeply sorry and ashamed,” the outlet reported.
TRUMP ‘DRAFT EXECUTIVE ORDER’ CAME FROM OUTSIDE WHITE HOUSE
The former hairstylist and ex-liberal was arrested by FBI agents on Jan. 25, 2021. He was charged with numerous offenses, including impeding a law enforcement officer during civil disorder and engaging in disorderly conduct with intent to disturb a hearing before Congress.
Straka’s “Walk Away” movement gained momentum in 2018 after he left the Democratic Party and encouraged others to join him. Two days after the Capitol riot, the movement’s Facebook page with over half a million followers was removed.
