Former President Jimmy Carter called on Democrats for the first time Tuesday to contribute to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
“I’m asking for your help for the first time,” Carter wrote in a fundraising email ahead of a quarterly Federal Election Commission disclosure deadline Sunday.
“President Obama emailed. Now I’m emailing. When two former presidents reach out, you know it’s important,” he continued in the message entitled “Donald Trump.”
A Democratic-controlled House would “fix the direction we’re headed” and “restore America to the big-hearted country we know it can be,” Carter told supporters.
“I’m asking you not to become complacent, disheartened, or hopeless in the wake of what’s transpired under this president,” he added. “I’m asking you to fight for what’s right, to stand up for our morality, and to never lose faith that the future is bright.”
Carter has been vocal in his criticism of President Trump as he promotes his foundation and charity work. He has stumped for Democratic candidates in the past, including this election cycle with Stacey Abrams. Abrams is hoping to become the first black female governor in the U.S. in his home state of Georgia.
DCCC in September beat its total digital fundraising record from 2016, raising $75.27 million so far in 2018, according to Politico.
