Arizona senator John McCain has released a statement condemning fellow Republican Donald Trump’s recent statements about the Khan family, whose son Humayun was a U.S. Army captain killed defending the lives of his fellow soldiers in Iraq in 2004. Khan’s parents have criticized Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the country, prompting Trump, his campaign surrogates, and his supporters to attack the Khan family on a personal level.
McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee and a Navy combat veteran, issued a statement Monday morning that pays tribute to Humayun Khan’s service and condemns Trump. “In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier’s parents. He has suggested that the likes of their son should not be allowed in the United States — to say nothing of entering its service. I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement. I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers, or candidates,” reads the Arizona senator’s statement in part.
